Just Host safely returned from Chicago this week after a very exciting trip to Hosting Con 2008.  The show definitely lived up to its name as ‘the largest gathering of hosted services professionals in the world.’  Exhibitors and attendees ranged from web host providers, web host support services, dedicated servers and web host forums and review sites. 

I can guarantee that following Hosting Con you will see quite a few changes to justhost.com and our service, as so many great ideas were discussed and I am now full of enthusiasm from meeting so many great people within the hosting industry.   

I must just add that I came back from Hosting Con with a slightly heavier bag after winning a Playstation 3 from Dedicated Now’s competition. That was all I needed to convince me to attend Hosting Con next year, see you all in Washington DC!

As you may be able to tell from the lack of a blog last week, Just Host is keeping me very busy with new orders and signing up with affiliates and advertisers.  Then suddenly we decide to attend Hosting Con in Chicago at the end of the month!

So for the first time Just Host is heading overseas to the windy city to mingle with fellow hosts, see what’s new in the industry and essentially how to provide the best service to our customers.  I will be attending with my colleague Luke from Just Uptime – our server and website monitoring service - and we will be meeting with many hosting websites to discuss Just Host and attending networking events such as the Networking Reception on the Monday night.

It may sound like a rather simple question, but for the less technical minded of us it’s actually a valid one.  Web hosting has been in existence pretty much since the explosion of the internet and has rapidly grown as an industry in its own right in recent years.  In essence web hosting is the renting of space on a web server for your website to be stored on. So why can’t you do this yourself with your own server?  Why do we have to pay a middleman to host our own sites?

A web server basically does its job by being connected to the internet all the time. For security reasons, this means they will usually be stored in secure surroundings and in a climate controlled environment to receive the best possible performance.  When you sign up with a host provider, as well as paying for this set up, you will also be paying for specialist software and their technical expertise, which comes at an unrealistic cost for most website owners.

This all points to the simple answer that it’s much easier to let your host provider bother with all the above particulars than having to worry about it yourself.  The cost of a yearly subscription to a host provider is at an all time low and whether you are an individual or a business the benefits clearly outweigh the cost.
